How it started

Kimberly
The person who kept asking, “How did you meet?”

It started because people were nervous.

They came into the finance office to do paperwork, but most understood I was also there to sell them something. To make the conversation feel less like a transaction, I started asking couples a simple question: How did you meet?

Something often shifted. They relaxed. They looked at each other. Sometimes, as they told the story, they seemed to remember what they had liked about each other in the first place.

The stories were often funny or surprising. I loved hearing them.

I’ve been asking people that question ever since.

Years ago, I bought thatshowwemet.com, thinking it might become a place where people could upload and share their stories. It sat unused, and eventually I let it go.

When I picked the domain back up, I thought I would finally build that collection. But as I worked on it, the idea evolved: help people capture their own story—the different recollections, the messy, funny, “wait—that happened?” moments—and turn it into something they could keep.

That’s still the point.
