“I was a crasher. When he greeted us, she introduced me to him. He barely noticed me.”
The first time I met Ron was when my good friend who I grew up with took me to her cousin’s (Ron!) party in NYC. I was a crasher. When he greeted us, she introduced me to him. He barely noticed me. He was the host and was on the move. I, however, did notice he was very cute and had a great smile and a nice way about him. I mentioned in passing to my friend that your cousin is “kinda cute” and then didn’t give it a second thought. It was many months later when my same friend was having a party that she remembered what I had said and made a point of introducing us again. That night we talked quite a bit and Ron took my number. The first time he called I was preparing for a final exam in grad school and couldn’t go out with him. I did say….”please call me again”. This was the encouragement he needed and the next time he called we made a date. Our first date was at the Bank Cafe (still there, in Murray Hill, but now called Banc). I ordered the chicken salad ( for dinner can you believe) and he had the tortellini. He barely ate. And now I joke that I was going to ask him ” are you going to finish that?”. I told my girlfriend Nancy later that night that I wasn’t sure how it went. I am an outgoing, in your face kind of gal and he was so shy with me. But there were no red flags, so I said if he calls me again I will go out with him….and he did. That summer we spent lots of time together getting to know one another (esp in Westhampton) and by the late Fall we were pretty serious with each other….it is 30 some odd years later….and it’s great.
