“Clearly not super friendly, I laughed and said to myself, “ok jerk” and I never wrote back.”
Seth and I met through a mutual friend, someone he grew up with and I went to college with. One night during the summer of 2001 we met for the first time at Bar A in Belmar, NJ. I was there with my college friends and Seth was their with his high school friends. Our mutual friend, Michelle, introduced me to her guy friends from high school and Seth was one of them. We literally said “Hi, nice to meet you” and that was that.
Over the next few years our paths crossed from both living and working in NY and we were both at Michelle’s wedding but we didn’t have anything to do with each other.
Fast forward to the Fall/Winder of 2006 when I decided to move to San Francisco with my sister. I had been on Jdate in NY and since I was moving to SF, I decided to take a look at the guys from there. I came across a picture of a guy that looked familiar and after reading his profile, which said something like I recently moved to SF from NY and I am originally from Marlboro, NJ, I realized that this could be Michelle’s friend (whose name I didn’t remember haha). I decided to simply reach out as a friend, and said I think you are Michelle’s friend, I’m moving to SF too, how’s it going?, if this is you great, if not hi anyway. He wrote back saying, “Yup, that’s me, good luck with your move.” Clearly not super friendly, I laughed and said to myself, “ok jerk” and I never wrote back.
My sister and I went ahead with our move in January 2007 and I was enjoying my new city, having fun with my sister and new friends, and dating a bit, too. That’s when I got an email from Seth to my gmail account, saying hi and that he ran into our friend, Michelle, and she suggested he reach out to me so we could be friends since we sort of know each other and we both recently moved to SF. I agreed to meet him, as friends, for drinks, which actually ended up being a glass of wine at his apartment because there was a big basketball final game on and he wanted to watch it (and knowing him now, that makes complete sense, as he’s a sports fanatic). I decided not to mention the prior communication on Jdate and went in thinking I was meeting a new friend. He quickly told me that he had just gotten out of a relationship (from Jdate haha) of 2 1/2 months and he seemed upset and vulnerable. We swapped dating stories and I politely told him that the girl was probably just not that into him. I finished my wine and went on my way. I remember that on my way out I smiled and thought hmmm, that was fun and he is cute :).
Long story short, after that night we started to hang out as friends for about a month, which turned into dating, then officially becoming boyfriend/girlfriend, traveling to Hawaii together, moving in together, getting engaged, getting married and having 2 awesome kids. We have had many adventures along the way and still live in San Francisco where it all started. It’s funny how we grew up 20 minutes from each other in NJ, our paths crossed post-college, yet it took us both separately moving 3000 miles away to be put together thanks to fate and our friend)!
